3D Planning in Orthognatic Surgery

Why 3D Planning?

Since around the last decade, there has been a change in paradigm in the field of diagnosis and therapy in relation to orthognathic surgery owing to technological advances. The Maxillofacial Institute is at the forefront of this revolution, being the first European centre to introduce three-dimensional planning for surgery.

The introduction of the intraoral scanner, low-radiation CBCT (cone-beam computed tomography) and latest-generation 3D software means that analysis can be performed with millimetric precision.

These allow the surgeon to anticipate, plan and simulate a virtual surgical procedure before undertaking real surgery in the operating theatre, and even share the virtual results beforehand with the patient to increase their confidence and satisfaction about the treatment. In this way, any potential errors or unforeseen complications in the operating theatre can be eliminated, in addition to reducing surgery time and postoperative trauma for the patient.
