When this happens,<strong> the brain reacts by triggering a systemic alarm response that awakens the patien<\/strong>t to resume breathing. This causes fatigue and tiredness during the day and, in severe cases, due to the reduction in the amount of oxygen carried by the blood, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic and hormonal alterations can occur.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Who can get OSA?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In adults,<strong> this condition is related to the consumption of relaxants such as alcohol, some neuromuscular diseases, and smoking<\/strong>. <strong>Overweight<\/strong> patients also tend to have a narrower upper airway and therefore at higher risk of obstruction during sleep.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Mandibular retrognathia (class II bite) and Sleep Apnea<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11485 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/content.www.institutomaxilofacial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/post-1-530x421.jpg\" alt=\"apnea del sue\u00f1o\" width=\"530\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/content.www.institutomaxilofacial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/post-1-530x421.jpg 530w, https:\/\/content.www.institutomaxilofacial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/post-1-1125x894.jpg 1125w, https:\/\/content.www.institutomaxilofacial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/post-1-200x159.jpg 200w, https:\/\/content.www.institutomaxilofacial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/post-1-125x99.jpg 125w, https:\/\/content.www.institutomaxilofacial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/post-1.jpg 1379w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/>In addition to the above factors, <strong>certain facial patterns are at increased risk for OSA<\/strong>. These patterns are those composed of<strong> a small and \/ or retracted jaw, which tend to give a concave facial profile with little definition between the chin and the neck<\/strong>.
