About us

About Maxillofacial Institute

Instituto Maxilofacial is formed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists treating all alterations affecting the face and mouth areas.

In the Maxillofacial area, our surgical team is led by Dr Hernandez Alfaro, who is in charge of all orthognathic procedures. Hand to hand with him, Dr Adaia Valls and Dr Duran are experienced maxillofacial surgeons specialised in different areas of the maxillofacial surgery, while Dr. Alejandro Mazarro is dedicated to the more cosmetic side of facial surgery.

In the Department of Advanced Implantology, Dr. Alvaro Reuter and Dr. Alvaro Giner deal with the most complicated cases of implants with lack of bone, and are also specialized in 3D planning for implant colocation.

In our Center, the expertise of our team is complemented by cutting edge technologies, that allow a rapid and efficient design and implementation of every treatment

Psychological Support Unit

Inspired by the observations we have made in our more than 30 years of experience, at Instituto Maxillofacial we have created the Psychological Support Unit for Orthognathic Surgery Patients, a psychological support service for our patients and their families during this crucial stage of their lives.

Led by Rebeca García, Graduate in Psychology, this new Unit will focus on:

Help our patients face and manage their feelings and emotions, especially in the post-surgical stage, when they are especially vulnerable.
Provide the patient's family members or companions with tools to be as helpful as possible, working on their capacities for empathy and patience, and psycho-educating them in healthy companionship skills.

This is achieved through various tools that we implement during the patient's journey, including individual psycho-emotional support sessions.

General FAQS

What is a CBCT?

A CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is an open format scanner. It is characterized by the conical shape of its X-ray emission source, this is important because with a single rotation you get the necessary information of the desired area, minimizing the time that the patient has to be in the scanner. The main advantages of this type of scanner are:
- Low radiation: The radiation dose is very low, since 75 CBCT sessions are equivalent to a single conventional CT scan.
- Immediate diagnosis: The execution time is very short, approximately two minutes.
- Open scanner: Avoids situations of claustrophobia.

What is the price of an orthognathic surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is performed to treat a wide range of malformations and conditions, presenting very different levels of difficulty and, in many cases, requiring of complementary procedures to achieve a maximal facial asymmetry. That is why we cannot list a range of prices, since in most of the cases the figure would be misleading.

Will Dr. Hernandez Alfaro perform my surgery?

Your surgeon will be the person with whom you have your first consultation and with whom you communicate throughout the process. If you ask for a first consultation with Dr. Hernandez Alfaro, the answer is absolutely yes.

Is there a hotel within Teknon Medical Center?

No, there are fantastic facilities at Teknon Medical Center in which patients can be cared for in a private suit, if so required, but this covers only hospitalization time.

After medical discharge, we have agreements with several close-by Hotels that will gladly accommodate your special care needs. Ask our International Coordinator for a list of recommended lodgings.

Is it a problem if I don’t speak Spanish?

Not at all. International patients will have an assistant to ensure that they understand the procedure and all the instructions from the medical team and accompany them throughout the hospital admission process and on medical follow-up visits.

How do I make an appointment?

When you decide to schedule an appointment over the phone, here are the questions you can expect to be asked:
- Your medical history and information (diagnosis, medical concerns)
- The approximate suitable dates for your visits/appointments
- Your basic/essential contact information

What should I bring to the consultation?

At the time of your very first appointment with us, please assist us by providing the following information:
- All relevant health history forms and documents
- Any imaging studies that have been performed in the previous months (if available)

Please be advised, that all patients under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian

Will I have any x-rays or any other tests done during my first visit?

In order to provide our patient with an accurate diagnosis and developing a personalized treatment, it is necessary that Prof Hernandez Alfaro himself evaluates the need for x-rays or any other tests for each case individually. In case you have had any imaging studies such as CBCT scan or lateral x-ray performed in the last 6 months prior to your visit with us, please bring them with you.

How can I pay for the first visit?

For your convenience, we accept cash, bank card (except American Express), or bank transfer (the cost of the FV should be paid three working days prior to the appointment).

What can I do if I have additional questions/concerns?

In case any concerns or questions arise following your appointment, we would be very happy to address them via e-mail. In some specific cases, a videoconference can be scheduled.

First videoconference

What is the videoconference/videoconsultation?

It is service offered to those patients who live abroad, or far from Barcelona, or who cannot come physically to our facilities for a consultation. It is basically a videocall in which our specialists can diagnose the patients, with the aid of some information that will be required from the patients prior to the videoconference.

What kind of documentation do I need prior to the videoconference?

- All relevant health history forms and documents
- A list of all medications that you are currently taking
- A list of your concerns/questions regarding your medical condition
- Any Imaging studies (radiological images) such as CBCT scan, TAC or x-ray lateral
- Pictures (front & profile), intraoral photos
- Dental molds (if surgery first)
- Orthodontic records (if available/possible)

Why do you need my medical records (pictures, scan etc) prior to the videoconference?

These requirements are necessary for Prof Hernandez Alfaro in order to evaluate your case properly, and be able to develop a personalized treatment plan for your specific needs.

How can I pay for the videoconsultation?

For your convenience, we accept bank transfer (the cost of the first visit should be paid three working days prior to the appointment and a copy of the wire transfer should be sent by email to our international coordinator).

Once we have received your payment, we will confirm your videoconference.

What is the difference between in situ visit and the videoconsultation?

An in situ consultation is the preferred option, as it makes possible getting to know Prof Hernandez Alfaro personally and it also entails undergoing all necessary tests almost immediately. The videoconsultation is an alternative offered to the international patients for whom travelling may be problematic in terms of scheduling or costs. It requires sending the necessary documentation beforehand in order for the videoconsultation to be maximally efficient and informative.

Can I receive a quote for my treatment over the phone/via Skype?

According to our company policy, all of our quotes/quotations are provided following the videoconference by email and are password protected in order to ensure that your personal information is protected.

What can I do if I have additional questions/concerns?

In case any concerns or questions arise following the appointment, we would be very happy to address them via e-mail. In some specific cases, a videoconference can be scheduled.

Do I require another consultation appointment prior to the surgery? If so, how long does it take?

Yes, it is required to have an appointment prior to the medical surgery in order to perform all preoperative tests and the test necessary for 3D planification. Furthermore, you can also speak with Prof Hernandez Alfaro and all of your concerns/questions will be answered.

LOPD (Organic Law for Data Protection)

Prior to any treatment, you will be required to sign a data protection form, in order to secure the correct treatment of your personal information as a patient.
